Questions you might have
Which formats are supported?
It reads SRT, WebVTT (.vtt), ASS/SSA and YouTube's SBV, and writes SRT, VTT, ASS, SBV and a plain TXT transcript without timestamps.
Is styling kept?
Timing, line breaks, italics, bold and underline are kept. ASS fonts, colours and positions have no SRT/VTT equivalent and are dropped; ASS exports use a clean white-on-black-outline default style.
Which format does YouTube want?
YouTube Studio accepts both SRT and VTT.
Old subtitle files show garbled characters?
Files that aren't UTF-8 are read in the usual older encoding for this page's language (Windows-1252 on English pages), and every export is UTF-8 with a BOM so players on Windows show accents correctly. For older Chinese files, use the Chinese version of this page.
The timing is off or lines are too long. Can it help?
Yes. Use the Shift timing and Fix layout tabs in the same tool.
